In Bananabrum, players take on the role of a sea turtle struggling to survive the effects of a new predator threat. As a sea turtle struggles to find food and oxygen, it loses health by being buffeted by the powerful and relentless jaws of the crabs. In this struggle, the sea turtle must find the aid of a friendly octopus to save itself. It will do this by venturing into the strange underwater world known only as the Octopus Islands.
The game is set up in a similar way to other tiles based games, whereby players rotate tiles to form columns. The goal is to reach the center of the island and continue to rotate the tiles. If a tile is rotated too much, it will fall off the edge, which means that another column will have to be built in its place. This gives the feeling of a maze, with a sea turtle making its way through an underground maze.
The Bananabrum strain comes with a unique game board design. It is designed in a rather unusual style, giving it a unique appeal. It features two concentric circles with eight small squares across the border. These squares are split into two sections, each divided into four tiles and connected via a series of hoops and pipes.
Each of the squares contains one of the octopus token, giving the game a more realistic and natural feel than most tiles. The turtle is represented by two eyes and two spots on its body – these represent its arm and legs. Additionally, there are two small fins on either side of its head, which can rotate and move.

The fifteen tiles are laid out in a pattern that is known as the ABC formation. This set of tiles is designed so that there are twenty-two squares in a given diagonal that runs across the board. The diagonal is divided in half, creating thirty-six total squares. This means that the turtles can only be placed in a fourth of a circle around the board.
There are two different ways in which to place the turtles on the board, depending on how the players have set up their boards. Each player chooses the way they want to place the turtles on their boards and will need to place all of their turtles in at least fifteen squares from the edges or ends of any previous rows. There are also certain tiles that will be placed diagonally, so that all of the different sections of the Bananabrum Strain can connect to each other. This unique design makes the game much more interesting and fun to play, whether a team is playing the game in teams or each player is playing the game alone.
