The Genetics of Marijuana
Limited Edition Seeds. Not many people like to think of seeds as being limited edition. In fact, for many people it’s one of their most beloved collectibles and rightly so. After all, seeds are the building blocks of life. From simple binturates to the magnificent harvests we have today; seeds are the heart and soul of the plant world. So why then limit your enjoyment by stocking up on small amounts of seasonal varieties, or even short-lived exotic varieties?
When we talk of limited edition seeds, the majority of us picture a few rare species that are only available from a select number of breeders, or seed catalogues that have been hard to get hold of. Truth be told, this is rarely the case. Limited Edition Seeds has simply been created as a result of the need to stock up on specific and limited quantities. Most regular seeds being sold today contain literally thousands upon thousands of different genetic combinations that have been carefully selected and bred to produce a wide array of desirable end products.
But what makes limited edition seedsman seeds different? To start with, they’re not actually limited edition seeds, at least not in the true meaning of the term. They are, however, extremely limited in both supply and price – and, unlike regular seeds, they are not sold as such. Instead, breeders sell them to those interested in owning a rare piece of a plant with a full, rich, fruity aroma, or to those who simply want to experience a taste of something completely different.
For example, one popular strain is the Sativa Skittlez X Birthdaycake X Cream. This one was developed by a California breeder, Harry Husbands. The flowers are actually quite small, less than half an inch tall, but they grow up to be an impressive two feet tall when fully grown. The flowering period is very short (or non-existent, depending on the exact species) and the leaves remain green even during autumn. Other limited edition seeds are based on the same ‘flavor wheel’, including the Sativa Skittlez Rooibos, which is a hybrid between a Rooibos tea and a Skittlez candy gum.
Other limited edition cannabis seeds include indica strains such as the Blueberry Fragrance (which is actually a cross between Blueberry and French Vanilla), and the Hypo Epica Citrus Super Skunk. Both are characterized by their distinctive skunk scent and fruity, tropical-fruit flavor, and are also known for their high yield and disease resistance. Although they’re the first two, there aren’t really any true restrictions as to what’s considered to be an indica, except that it should have fairly short-growing characteristics. It’s likely that many of these varieties will soon be taken over by the new hybrid varieties that are created each year.
There are some cannabis seeds out there that have been feminized. This means that the mother plant has been transformed from male to female so that the plant can produce both male and female offspring. These plants tend to be extremely difficult to cultivate as the result, as it’s common for the mother to die before even one generation has passed. Cultivators usually need to harvest late in the season, because the young flowers will not bloom for several months afterwards. Some have tried crossbreeding indica with rudbeckia to create feminized rudbeckias, but this has not yet been tried successfully.
There are also hybrid, autoflowering seeds out there, most of which are being created by breeders. In this case, the feminized seeds are usually crossed with regular seeds to create a strain that’s taller, produces more flowers, and has a stronger, harder taste. Crossbreeding regular seeds with autoflowering seeds such as the autoflowering Sativa or Supernova is also an idea that is being explored. If these strains were ever to become commercially available, they would probably be available only to elite breeders. This would make the general public unable to afford them.
All in all, the future of cannabis seeds looks very bright indeed. Biotech companies are constantly making breakthroughs with genetics and it is expected that we will soon see complete control of how different types of cannabis are produced. There is a lot of money to be made if you know how to manipulate your genetics. There are already companies out there that are using this technology for the production of quality cannabis, so it could be here within a couple of years.
